I do all types of work on computers, but laptop overheating has become such a problem, I'm now offering a new service. if you're experiencing a hot laptop, call me.
Read on below to see what the causes and cures are.
Is your laptop overheating? When it was new, you could use it on your lap comfortably. But now, is the bottom of it hot to the touch? Does it sometimes suddenly shut down for no apparent reason? Does it get incredibly slow after it's run a while? Are you using use a plate or cooling pad under it? If you answered "yes" to any these, then the countdown to failure has already started. Laptop cooling pads, like a lot of medicines, only cure the symptom, not the cause. The longer you use one, the more damage caused to the laptop. Some cooling pads actually worsen the problem because it tries to move the air in the wrong direction. Your lap is cool, but the laptop's burning up.
Laptop overheating is a common problem for several different reasons. But no matter what the reason is, if it goes unchecked, you'll have a paperweight instead of a laptop.
Dust is the culprit in most cases because the cooling fan sucks in dust from the bottom like a vacuum and then packs it against the grill on the inside of the heatsink. When viewed from inside, the dust looks like a layer of thick felt which air can't pass through. You can't see it from the exterior and it can't be blown out with compressed air. That just causes more problems. It needs to be disassembled and cleaned manually.
These photos are good examples. It's not uncommon at all to find this much dust accumulation. Sometimes more.
Other laptops, however, have a birth defect right out of the box that ironically pops up just out of warranty. HP (especially in the DV series), Compaq, Dell and Toshiba have all had class action suites against them for this.
If you didn't hear about it, you're not alone. They didn't attempt to locate people with affected machines.
The manufacturers were all are trying to get too much performance from a poorly designed CPU/GPU heatsink. That coupled with the use of thermal pads to fill in the gap and transfer heat. In time that pad will lose contact and the heat won't be transferred to the heatsink causing an overheat problem. Replacing the pads with copper shims of the correct thickness will cure it. Nothing transfers heat better than copper.
All of my shims are lapped by hand to ensure they're perfectly flat, then the thickness precisely measured.
I've had to replace many motherboards because of overheat problems in towers and laptops. If your laptop is blowing extremely hot air out the exhaust, then your CPU or GPU or both are overheating. If it's getting really hot on the bottom but not exhausting hot air, it's clogged with dust. It's possible to have both problems at the same time.
Here's the good news!
I can fix the problem for you.
Normally with a one day turn around.
(depends on the type computer and severity of the problem)
Overheating because of dust isn't limited to just laptops. Towers, Playstations, WII's, Xbox, you name it. If it has a fan, it's sucking dust. If you see a lot of dust accumulating in your units USB ports, CD drawers, vents and such, you may have a potential problem. look at these photos. They're bad, but far from the worst I've seen.
