In the spring of xxxx, Mark Perry and I found this wonderful instrument hidden away in a garage in West Virginia. She was in rough shape, but after playing her for a few minutes, I knew she was the one to invest in. Nine foot bass strings! I'd never played anything like it. Mark confirmed my intuition, and took her back to his shop for restoration.
So the summer before I college, I spent almost all my time in Mark's shop, watching and learning as much as I could. Again and again, Mark emphasized the importance of a restoration that was true to the instrument, rebuillding, not with China made parts, but with materials specifically crafted for use in a Stieff. After an extensive initial cleaning, he replaced the corroded shanks, hammers and whippens with Renner Premium Blue ones, true to the Stieff's history. He also replaced the pin block and restrung her with brand new strings. Finally, as the pictures show, we sanded her down and revarnished her to shine like new.
While it breaks my heart to part with this instrument that has been such a pivotal part of my life, I'm afraid that I cannot keep her.
